Sound Design Build is a licensed architectural and building contracting firm based in Kitty Hawk. Founded by Erin Powell, the firm operates at the intersection of thoughtful design and skilled construction—offering a streamlined approach that carries projects from concept through completion.
After more than a decade as a licensed architect, Erin made the deliberate decision to also obtain her general contractor’s license. This dual expertise allows Sound Design Build to provide cohesive, efficient project delivery while maintaining a high standard of design integrity throughout the building process.
Erin began her career at leading corporate firms in New York City and Boston, serving as a lead architect on projects for prominent institutions including Google, MIT, Harvard University, and Northwestern University. She later relocated with her family to the Outer Banks, where she established Sound Design Build.
The firm’s portfolio spans a diverse range of work, including ground-up commercial projects such as Kitty Hawk Baptist Church, office buildings, veterinary clinics, residential interiors, additions, and new construction. Beyond the Outer Banks, the firm has also contributed to impactful international work, including shipping-container resource centers in Haiti.
Founded during Erin’s early years as a first-time mother, Sound Design Build reflects a balance of professional ambition, hands-on construction expertise, and a deep appreciation for coastal living. Today, the firm continues to grow through meaningful partnerships, creative problem-solving, and a strong connection to the community it serves.
